2009 Epiphone Sheraton II EB – Timeless Class and Versatility

Ahh, the Jazzy Class of the Epiphone Sheraton II EB. Finished in a beautiful glossy black, with awesome headstock inlays. This guitar looks just fantastic on a guitar stand, let alone how she performs when playing the thing!

Firstly, a little bit about Epiphone’s history, which is pretty cool. Starting off about 130 years ago in Greece from a family with a history of instrument making, Epaminondas Stathopoulos (from which ‘Epi’ came) learned the art of luthiering from his father, and patented some mandolin designs etc…

Before long he was crafting guitars and getting a reputation for his quality and skill. Time passed and eventually Gibson bought the rights to Epiphone back in 1957 (as Epiphone suffered from a tough economy after the War) and the original Stathopoulos family was now out of the music game with corporate Gibson taking over the Epiphone brand!

Les Paul once stated that he never played a bad Epiphone instrument, so I think you can trust them too!

Okay stop yawning, I happen to think history is important! So let’s have a quick look at the Epiphone Sheraton II specs, then at some pics of this bootilicious babe…

  • Arched maple top, back, and sides,
  • Bound F-holes, body, and neck,
  • Dual humbuckers,
  • 3-way Switch
  • 2 volume and 2 tone controls
  • Solid center block and hollow wings
  • Grover tuners (actually do a decent job too)
  • Pearl inlays with triangle abalone overlays… very nice indeed!!

Righto, how does it Look and Feel?

Having spent many years with a Strat I expected this to be much bulkier and have a ‘flatter‘ type of tone. However, with its thin profile, arched top and back, it wasn’t that much different from handling a Les Paul or a Telecaster. Plus, with it being a semi-hollow body, it is very light and comfortable (esp when standing up).

The aging Gold Hardware on this particular guitar looks very nice with authentic wear in all of the right places, giving this almost mint condition guitar a slightly used, but well cared for look and feel.

Judging from the serial number on the inside cavity, this guitar looks to have a manufacturing date of 2009, if I am reading the serial number correctly.

The headstock has a very intricate floral inlay pattern, which is unique to the Sheraton and is not found on any other Epiphone (as far as I know).

And the Pearl with triangle Abalone overlays in the neck inlays are very, very cool…

The triple edge binding look’s great and wraps all the way around the body and neck (look at the pic above for the neck binding) and is so far standing up to the test of time without any signs of it coming apart from the edges of the body.

The tortoise shell pick guard adds a really nice touch and it also has a nice cream binding around the edges…

Even the F-holes are bound, which is something most Gibson’s don’t even have. Nothing has been left undone on the Sheraton, a very nice guitar in all aspects of it’s build.

The controls are pretty much standard fare, two volume and two tone controls, which are both very usable and respond well to use, along with a three way toggle switch. The clear plastic, orange witches hat knobs stand out, but still look the part. Maybe a gold knob would of suited a little better, but these still look great anyways.

The back of the guitar is all Black, as you would expect…

It has a neck through body neck joint (probably long tenon)… and the Strap knob screwed into the heel of the neck. The neck has a really solid feel to it, although it doesn’t feel too thick, I must say that it is a very comfortable neck profile to play, I would almost describe it as a flatish D profile at the heel which tapers down to a nice rounded C shape at the headstock.

The gold Grover tuners not only look great but feel really good when tuning up, I really like these grover tuners, they have a great ratio and feel very solid and sturdy. I have found that any one who has used them likes them.

So what did I think of the Tone????

Okay, I thought both pickups sounded great clean and chords were clear and not mushy at all. One thing I noticed was it seemed to have a bit more natural compression, a sort of ‘tighter’ compressed tone especially when playing with the fingers.

I liked how the individual notes really stood out, and it sounded so dynamic and well, focused if you know what I mean!

2009 Epiphone Sheraton II EB Bridge Pickup

As for OD & Distortion I used my BWM OD pedal (TS808 clone) and my Rat clone, and it sounded pretty nice, not at all mushy. It did lead runs, power chords, bluesy stuff and general rock just fine.

You can easily get away with playing a decent AC/DC riff on it, but then effortlessly switch over to a Robben Ford or Bonnamassa sound. I did note that it had a fair amount of bass on it, which can get a little bit strong at times, but this was still pretty minor and probably more of a personal tonal preference rather than a gripe with the guitar.

I was happy that it took distortion very well, and didn’t get fizzy but was solid, rich and thick. It handled distortion nearly as well as my Epiphone Les Paul.

This guitar was more versatile than I thought it would be, having the warmth and responsiveness of single coils, but yet with the fat rock attitude of Humbuckers, with lots of sustain and still sounding open and woody on cleans (with that lovely compression!).

I did notice that when I cranked my Blackstar HT40 to near full saturation it lost a little clarity and character, but then that’s to be expected from a guitar not originally designed to be a heavy metal Japanese virgin slayer type of axe! It did feedback pretty quick on high gain, more so than my Les Paul, but feedback, when controlled is very cool too.

Hollow-bodies aren’t just about Jazz, which is what I originally thought, and if anyone is looking for a great range of tones from a single guitar, from cool and melodic Jazz, right up to heavy rock, then this guitar might just be the one your looking for because it can handle most anything you throw at it, and just looks down right classy.

This guitar will definitely appeal to you bedroom rockers that are looking for a classic tone with greater sustain and output. I was really glad to have a chance to play this baby…

About strataminor

Born in Brisbane I am a bedroom guitar player, although having played in front of churches (tough crowd!!) for quite a few years so some understanding of band dynamics, timing, gear (private use compared to public use) and melodic structure, instrumental breaks (okay leather pants solos....) and of course amps! Besides from my love of guitar and the G.A.S that goes with it (hey email me I am always offloading gear!! lol) I love languages, and can converse in basic Japanese, and study biblical Greek. I live in Logan with my young family (so not heaps of time at the moment) and will be contributing gear reviews based on a lot of gear I have or still currently have.
