Epiphone Dot Super VS – Another Great Limited Editition Axe from Epi

Howdy, you may remember my review on the Epiphone Sheraton, a jazzy and bluesy black number, where I shared a little bit about Epiphone’s very Greek history. Well, today we have a similar beast as the Sheraton, but no history lesson, it’s Epiphone’s Dot ‘Super VS‘.

As with most of our reviews, first up a couple of vids…

For this first video, the guitar is plugged into a Ceriatone JTM45 and a Hiwatt 300W 2×12 speaker cab loaded with Fane speakers. Darren is also using a mid 90s USA ProCo Rat for the distortion.

The next video is an example of the guitar played clean, unfortunately I couldn’t mic this up so the audio quality isnt as good as I would like. The guitar is plugged straight into the same amp (Ceriatone JTM45), with no pedals.

The Dot ‘Super VS‘ is one of Epiphones Limited Edition models and was only in production for one year, back in 2006.

It is modeled on the famous Gibson ES335, so it’s a semi hollow body guitar with the lovely F holes and it sounds great for those juicy blues and Jazzy tunes.

Acoustically or unplugged, this guitar sounded great, it seemed to hold it’s sustain and it resonated well, which I think is a good sign that the guitar is pretty decent.

Unlike the standard ‘Dot’ the ‘DOT Super‘ has the ‘Mother of Pearl’ block inlays instead of the dot fretboard markers, which seems to be where the main visual differences end.

The headstock has an open book shape, but is rather elongated and stretched out and exaggerated. Which I think looks kinda cool.

Very similar to the standard ‘Dot‘ in all regards, it has a Rosewood Fretboard on a 24.75’ Scale length set maple Neck.

The 22 frets have a Medium Jumbo sized fret wire, and the fret board seems to be fairly flat, so bends didn’t seem a problem.

I found the neck was fairly thick and chunky with a roundish profile and according to other sources, the Dot Super VS has a ’60s neck profile, which, apparently is not as deep as the vintage fifties models.

Finished in an antique, two tone poly sunburst, over a laminated Flamed Maple, Semi-Hollow body with cream binding.

The Two Classic Alnico humbuckers (57CH’G’) sounded quite good I thought, with the neck pickup being my favorite. I believe the Classic Alnico humbuckers are using the Alnico 5 magnets, with the neck having an output of 8.1k ohms, the bridge an output of 13.3k ohms. I don’t think they need replacing as they were warm and full, and surprisingly good on OD and distortion. They weren’t mushy at all and lead notes were full of singing sustain, clarity and a lot of fun really.

The bridge pickup was bright and seemed to have that quack like characteristic you would expect from a bridge pup. It was quite usable, but it did seem to respond better with something like a chorus, mod delay, etc… to fill it out a little. I thought having the selector switch in the middle position you a great balance between the two pickups, with a very nice blend between the soft mellowness of the neck and the brightness of the bridge, it was actually very usable and could easily be the main position for the Rhythm pickup selection and was very tweak-able with the two tone controls.

All of the hardware had a Chrome finish, which was starting to pit on the tail piece, but the pick up covers and Grover Die-Cast tuners were all looking like new on a guitar that is about 8 years old at the time of writing this review.

So, going by the serial number, with the first four digits reading ‘EE06‘, we can see this guitar was made in China, around 2006, which as I mentioned earlier, according to www.epiphonewiki.com, was the only year the Dot Super was made.

Overall, I thought the build quality was very good and there were no obvious flaws in the construction that I can easily recognize. I’m no Luthier though, so I can only go by how the guitar looks cosmetically and feels to play. But, in saying that, the neck was straight, it didn’t buzz, and there were no finish cracks in the cream binding or neck joint.

The guitar aesthetically looks really good and has been well finished, with the flamed maple top being quite stunning and the creme binding tasteful. Like most Epi’s, it has similar features you would find on a Gibson, typical 2 vol & 2 tone controls (which work well enough) with Amber bell knobs and a 3-way selector switch .

The black pick guard had the Epiphone emblem on it, which I think adds a little pzazz, just a cosmetic touch, but still kinda cool in my opinion.

I must admit, I was impressed by the Dot Super. It had a smooth tone, again with that slight humbucker compression that I really like, where you can ‘pop‘ notes and still have a nice clarity to the chords, and although the neck profile was thicker than what I am used too, it was still quite comfortable, so chord work or jazzy work that required movement around the neck was surprisingly easy.

So overall I would have to say, for the price you pay, you get a lot of guitar with the Epiphone Dot Super VS. Full rich versatile tones, comfortable feeling neck and body, and it looks fantastic too. You can pick these up pretty cheap 2nd hand and definitely a great guitar worth having! A classic!

About strataminor

Born in Brisbane I am a bedroom guitar player, although having played in front of churches (tough crowd!!) for quite a few years so some understanding of band dynamics, timing, gear (private use compared to public use) and melodic structure, instrumental breaks (okay leather pants solos....) and of course amps! Besides from my love of guitar and the G.A.S that goes with it (hey email me I am always offloading gear!! lol) I love languages, and can converse in basic Japanese, and study biblical Greek. I live in Logan with my young family (so not heaps of time at the moment) and will be contributing gear reviews based on a lot of gear I have or still currently have.
