Gibson BurstBucker No1 Humbucker Pickup

The Gibson BurstBucker No1 Humbucker Pickup, Model number: IM57A-NH; is the first in a series 3 replicas of Gibson’s original Patent Applied For (PAF) pickup models.

Okay so it does have the brand Gibson on it, and it is made in the USA, so that has to count for something right?!!

Firstly, this review is based on the pickup being played in the neck position. l tested this pickup while it was in a MIJ Orville Les Paul, with the standard specs of mahogany body, maple top etc… There’s a video you can check out a bit further down this page…

I found this pup, in the neck position, had a darkish, very traditional Les Paul sounding tone. Gibson informs us that it is a ‘Vintage Tone” and because it is slightly under-wound, I would say that nails it very well. So straight up, this vintage replica PAF may rule the metal heads or super high gainers out!

Okay tone! Most other reviewers are divided half and half in their opinions on this model, but a lot of them were comparing it to higher end models, like Seymour Duncan’s Seth Lovers (which are a kickass pup).

I personally loved this Burstbucker in the neck position for several reasons. Firstly it had a very nice, rich, full, but yet dynamic clean sound which is important to me. The sort of tone that when you ‘popped’ the strings or “dug in“, the tone responded accordingly.

It did open chords really well and noodling on those little lead runs was a lot of fun and sounded very cool, it was by far, a more natural clean than the PRS Dragon Treble 2, which was in the bridge position of the Orville.

What about OD? Well of course it sounded great, and surprisingly not mushy or ‘Woofy’ at all. It naturally was thicker in the neck position than if it were in the bridge position, but it certainly had a lovely sustain on the high notes and plenty of fat bass on the lower notes.

Here is a video Darren, our resident Guitar Gas guitarist did with the guitar I based this review off. He does mention that this guitar is suited more for High gain, probably because most of the time Darren was playing on the Bridge Pup, which is the PRS Dragon Treble 2 as I mentioned before.

In summary… the Gibson BurstBucker No1 Humbucker Pickup is a great all-rounder pickup that I think you can get at a reasonable price. It does both clean and OD really nicely and I would recommend a set of these in your Les Paul for sure, but let your ears guide you grasshopper!!

PEACE TO ALL

About strataminor

Born in Brisbane I am a bedroom guitar player, although having played in front of churches (tough crowd!!) for quite a few years so some understanding of band dynamics, timing, gear (private use compared to public use) and melodic structure, instrumental breaks (okay leather pants solos....) and of course amps! Besides from my love of guitar and the G.A.S that goes with it (hey email me I am always offloading gear!! lol) I love languages, and can converse in basic Japanese, and study biblical Greek. I live in Logan with my young family (so not heaps of time at the moment) and will be contributing gear reviews based on a lot of gear I have or still currently have.
