Lovepedal Eternity Burst – A Well Respected Overdrive Guitar Effect Pedal

Okay, today we have something a bit more ‘higher end‘ in terms of price with a review of the Lovepedal Eternity Burst from the ‘Church of Tone’ LovePedals Custom Guitar Pedals.

Okay, so before we get too excited, lets first have a listen to how the Eternity Burst sounds with Humbuckers. In this first video Darren is playing his Fender Stratocaster into a Peavey Delta Blues amp.

In this next video I wanted to hear how it sounded with single coils so I handed Darren my early 80s 62 RI Fender Stratocaster, which was made in the Fender Fullerton factory.

These pedals just ooze quality and have a very, very good reputation. They are handmade by Sean Michaels who started making pedals in the early nineties in Michigan, USA (he also made the classic COT 50 Boost).

So you’re looking at a boutique quality pedal here folks which is also used and endorsed by the likes of Lenny Kravitz and Andy Summers. So this offering from Sean is a well-regarded number indeed.

Alright then now for my humble opinion. For this review, this pedal was run through a very clean Blackstar HT40 Club, (not the Peavey Delta Blues you saw in the videos) with a USA voiced clean and no other effects. I used a single coil instrument (but apparently sounds fantastic with humbuckers too – just check out the video above 😉).

It’s obvious that the pedal is well made and is built with quality components, the controls have a wide range of tonal control and along with the footswitch are smooth and turn on and off silently.

The 3 controls are…

  • Volume,
  • Tone
  • Gain

I started out with a low gain setting, with the tone at about 12 o’clock and the volume set to the same level as the amp. I thought that it did the low gain thing very well, in fact I will point out the obvious and say that it is not a ‘high gain‘ pedal, but a very smooth harmonically rich OD.

It didn’t get too thin like some OD pedals do on low gain settings but could easily be used as a clean boost with some ‘Hair‘.

Next I moved the gain up to about halfway between the 10 and 11 mark which I would say is very near its sweet spot. Just lovely and smooth and you can really ‘dig into your guitar‘ and it responds to your playing style.

Play softly and it cleans up nicely, dig in and it fattens up and seems to produce more gain. The sign of good quality electronics to be that responsive.

I put the gain nearly full way, and it handled it well, with minimal noise and no ‘mush‘. No wonder Andy Summers likes it! The tonal range was similarly very usable, with the bassy tones still not overly mushy and the full treble still fairly ‘rich‘ and not icepicky.

Okay, to wrap up!

This pedal is quality, and as Lenny Kravitz states, “Finally someone figured out you only need one knob for an effect, I love the simplicity and sound of these pedals, great work” (taken from : http://www.lovepedal.com/history/ ).

For me, I found the sweet spot with the Gain set at 12, tone about 2-3pm (I like a nice presence and some mids) and the Volume set just a bit higher than the amp, just to give me a bit of boost and I am in tonal nirvana!

Totally recommend the Lovepedal Eternity Burst, and for a handmade pedal made in the U.S.A. they are not overly pricey!

About strataminor

Born in Brisbane I am a bedroom guitar player, although having played in front of churches (tough crowd!!) for quite a few years so some understanding of band dynamics, timing, gear (private use compared to public use) and melodic structure, instrumental breaks (okay leather pants solos....) and of course amps! Besides from my love of guitar and the G.A.S that goes with it (hey email me I am always offloading gear!! lol) I love languages, and can converse in basic Japanese, and study biblical Greek. I live in Logan with my young family (so not heaps of time at the moment) and will be contributing gear reviews based on a lot of gear I have or still currently have.
