Fernandes the Revival Black 70s Strat Copy – Another Japanese Beauty

Over the years I have seen the Fernandes brand pop up from time to time and I have often thought that these Japanese made “Law Suit” guitars looked pretty cool.

So recently, I managed to get my hands on a late 80s (possibly early 90s) black on black 70s Fender Stratocaster copy, which we’ll obviously be looking at. So let’s dive in, I’ve got a heap of cool pics for you to checkout, but first off, lets hear how she sounds….

In this first video Darren is playing through an all original USA made 1980s Silverface Fender Twin Reverb. The tube Screamer mentioned in this video, as with the rest of the following videos is the made in Japan TS9DX Turbo Tubescreamer version, the Rat pedal is the USA made version with the LM308 OP chip.

In this next video, Darren has plugged into a USA made Fender Hot Rod Deluxe…

Ok, now lets have a look at the pics, this Fernandes the Revival Strat copy featured a rosewood neck, and admittedly it looked very impressive, as I love an all black Strat.

Now I am the first to admit that I am no expert on Japanese guitars, but from the research I have done on Fernandes, it looks like they are the parent company of Burny, who were renowned for their Gibson Les Paul clones over the years!

This particular guitar model (to the best of my knowledge and research) is a “RST-50 72” which was produced in Japan between 1981 – 1990.

When I saw it, with its quality hardware, 2 piece alder body, rock maple neck with a dark and stormy rosewood fingerboard, I knew I had a decent axe on my hands.

When I looked around to see if other reviewers felt like I did about this guitar, I was happy to note that most loved it and some compared it to the older US Fender Strats.

There were however, some other reviewers who commented that the pickups and pots aren’t amazing, but almost all of the reviews I read agreed that the timber, craftsmanship and overall finishes were great.

Personally, I didn’t have any issues with the tone of the pups, I was very happy with how they sounded, but I did notice that the pots were a bit scratchy, but I guess you might expect that from a 20+ year old guitar!!!

When I first held the guitar I was really happy with the weight and balance. At 3.5 kilos, it was a tiny bit heavier than most Strats I’ve had, but it was a very comfortable weight that gave you an impression of a well built sturdy guitar.

With a standard contoured body and good balanced weight, sitting down to play with the guitar on my knee felt good, not like it was wanting to lean in any direction.

Unplugged it resonated really well, and it naturally sustained for quite a while, although not quite like a Les Paul! The neck pocket and tremolo were tightly fitted with all original specs.

Actually on the subject of the tremolo it had a nice solid full size steel block with ‘Made in Japan‘ stamped on it, which apparently is a characteristic of Fernandes and some Tokai instruments.

The neck profile is of great importance to me, and this guitar had a very nice ‘U’ shaped profile, which I found to be very comfortable for my smallish hands, slim but not too thin, and even with the typical 70s style three bolt neck plate it kept intonation and tuning fine.

Speaking of tuning, the tuning pegs are typical of a 70s style Fender Strat…

An absolute pleasure to play, and with its few little scratches and nicks, it looked how a real Strat should.

This guitar sounded fantastic. The neck pup is one of my favorite Strat sounds, and this was no exception. It had all bases covered, warm and woody with clarity and chime but could also get some grit in there too. Beautiful!

The bridge pickup on a Strat normally can be a bit thin for my liking, but this wasn’t too bad, I thought it was actually brilliant with OD (both light and heavy) and with some Fuzz it sounded perfect.

The 2nd position, (you know that Knopfler ‘Sultans of Swing’ tone?) was magic, and kept me noodling for hours.

So overall, assuming your running into a nice tube amp, your gonna get some pretty decent sounds out of this guitar.

I would totally recommend this guitar to anyone looking to buy something from the JV era, high quality tones coming from quality construction and components, you have a great instrument that can be purchased quite often for under $500, although I’m predicting that one day in the not too distant future that will change! Viva La MIJ!!

About strataminor

Born in Brisbane I am a bedroom guitar player, although having played in front of churches (tough crowd!!) for quite a few years so some understanding of band dynamics, timing, gear (private use compared to public use) and melodic structure, instrumental breaks (okay leather pants solos....) and of course amps! Besides from my love of guitar and the G.A.S that goes with it (hey email me I am always offloading gear!! lol) I love languages, and can converse in basic Japanese, and study biblical Greek. I live in Logan with my young family (so not heaps of time at the moment) and will be contributing gear reviews based on a lot of gear I have or still currently have.
