Laney Lionheart L20H Tube Head – Okay I am in love!!

Now I admit the title is a little dramatic, but other reviewers were correct to describe this amp as “wonderfully rich and complex in tones” and with a fair few mentioning it was one of the best amps they had ever played… and You know what?

I am going to go out on a limb and agree…!

This amp, which is made in the UK by Laney is amazing! Why?

Well after buying and selling TOO MANY AMPS you start to get a little jaded and after a while they just start sounding so very, very similar, which is probably why they come and go so often…

But then you get one that not only looks amazing, like the Laney Lionheart, with it’s blue tolex and wheat colored grille, but when you strum out a chord, it is just absolute tonal bliss!

Laney Lionheart L20H Tube Head Back

Laney Lionheart L20H Tube Head Back

Anyway, for this review of the 20 watt all tube class A Lionheart Head, I am running through the matching Laney Lionheart cab, fitted with a Celestion Blue and a UK made Greenback….which is ooohhh sooo sweet!

Usually, I don’t get too overly gushy when it comes to gear, but I was pretty pleased to pick up this rig, especially seeing how the cab was already fitted with the Celestion Blue and UK made Greenback… That my friends was the icing on the cake.

These two speakers together in the same cab give me the maximum sonic potential for this amp.

The amp head itself is not complex or complicated to use. It is a 2 channel affair, (with a switch for Bright) with inputs for Hi and Low. You have your clean Volume, then your normal BMT, but also with a Master Tone (ala Vox AC30) that can add extra top end sparkle and versatility.

Laney Lionheart L20H Tube Head Panel

Laney Lionheart L20H Tube Head Panel

Laney informs us that the amp has…

“Gold plated PCB’s and jack sockets, sealed gold contact relays are used in all signal paths for minimum sound coloration, and each amplifier comes fitted with the renowned “Type 4” large spring line reverb for the classic guitar reverb sound. Each Lionheart L20H features a hand stamped ‘build number’ in the order they come off the Laney production line, and comes with a custom made ‘Lionheart’ dust cover” (taken from Laney’s website).

It features 4 EL84 power tubes and 3 12AX7 in the pre-amp. It is a British voiced amp and it is perfect for clean noodling, wonderful for light and mid OD and it will take any pedal really well, something I have found Laney to be really good at.

I forgot to mention that it does have a drive channel, with a shared EQ and does a great low gain and mid OD extremely well… very usable, but I found 3 o’clock and above too fizzy for my tastes… still very cool though and don’t forget, it’s footswitchable.

Laney Lionheart L20H Tube Head with Speaker Cab

Laney Lionheart L20H Tube Head with Speaker Cab

Now the cab is wonderful, very compact for a 2 x 12 and the normal cab features 2 x GH12 speakers, but mine has the Celestion blue and the Greenback, which is magic.

I have never really used a Celestion Blue before, but I found it brings a 3D dimension and sparkle, as well as a wonderful warmth and clarity that goes well with this amp! The Greenback goes with nearly anything and brings some nice mid range honk to the OD.

So lets wrap up, as I am going to drag on forever! This amp is honestly a wonderful example of british voiced UK quality and a credit to Laney.

With wonderful spring reverb, cleans just dripping dynamics and tone. It can handle nearly all genres but let’s leave out metal (the Mesa Boogie type of amp is better for that) and looks amazing! Yes I admit a beaten up old 70s vintage Fender or Marshall amp can be as inspiring and mean a lot more than a pretty amp, but who can resist a royal blue tolex and wheat grille…I mean come on man!! LOL okay but the rich and complex warmth that comes from this Laney is truly worth recommending, but it ain’t cheap although I picked up a steal on a second hand set up (gee I love it when people give up guitar!!)

I am sure I have left something out, but I just want to sign off so I can go and PLAY GUITAR through this baby.

About strataminor

Born in Brisbane I am a bedroom guitar player, although having played in front of churches (tough crowd!!) for quite a few years so some understanding of band dynamics, timing, gear (private use compared to public use) and melodic structure, instrumental breaks (okay leather pants solos....) and of course amps! Besides from my love of guitar and the G.A.S that goes with it (hey email me I am always offloading gear!! lol) I love languages, and can converse in basic Japanese, and study biblical Greek. I live in Logan with my young family (so not heaps of time at the moment) and will be contributing gear reviews based on a lot of gear I have or still currently have.
