Behringer Echo Machine EM600 Review

Sometimes I must admit I approach a product with a preconception about company image, perceived quality and price point. Now Behringer, today’s focus, is a company that really divides opinions and admittedly they have made some dubious offerings in the past but are now doing much better with their quality control and product range.

Today’s review of the Behringer “Echo Machine (EM600)” which is a clone of Line 6’s ‘Echo Park’ is a compact stomp box full of options and is very versatile. Anyway, the Echo Machine is a one stop delay shop with nearly every delay you would want to use.

Finished in a dark green hard plastic in a standard BOSS sized pedal it seems okay at first glance, although some people would rather a metal casing which is understandable. One gripe up front though, I personally hate the power input to be on the side just near the input jack. Put it on the top, but that is my only whinge.

So what about delay sounds? Well the pedal definitely has a lot on board to choose from, and I was pleasantly surprised. Here is a list of the delay types:

  • Ping Pong
  • Reverse
  • Two different multi-delays
  • Tracking
  • Sweep
  • Swirl
  • Slap
  • …and three different tap modes.

This pedal does utilize Real Sound Modelling technology, which gives this pedal the ability to emulate the acoustics of a variety of environments. You can quickly switch between Tape, Analogue or Digital setting, with the modulation being different for each setting (you get Chorus, a tremolo type of effect and another swirling chorus type of sound).

Personally I like the tape or analogue delay with a little bit of modulation (similar to Memory man products but much longer delay time available). The standard tap delay or multi delays are nice and give your sound a sense of filled out sound.

I currently use this pedal on a daily basis into my Hiwatt T20 rig and it is all I need. I have used this pedal for a year and a half without any problems. I have accidently left this pedal on for days at a time by mistake and no dramas at all have eventuated.

Actually the Tube Overdrive (TO600) pedal, is awesome, and was one of the nicest ODs I have used, that I use constantly, without a hitch. I think psychology plays a big part of how we choose our gear, we cling to any bits of negative feedback, not matter how old or move towards brands that make us feel ‘secure’ or that we like to identify with (e.g. Fender guitars are not that amazing compared to a lot of Japanese clones made in the 80s and 90’s but Fender has that name, over say a MIJ Squire in the 80s).

I read on several other review sites people expressing surprise about how good this unit is. I have also had a TC Electronics Flashback Delay which I AB’d (come on, who doesn’t enjoy a good AB?). Now undoubtedly the TC Electronics was very good but not that much better especially for the $150+ price difference.

Anyway I recommend this pedal and I use it so much that I can honestly say that if you couldn’t see the pedal, you would think that it was a more expensive brand!

About strataminor

Born in Brisbane I am a bedroom guitar player, although having played in front of churches (tough crowd!!) for quite a few years so some understanding of band dynamics, timing, gear (private use compared to public use) and melodic structure, instrumental breaks (okay leather pants solos....) and of course amps! Besides from my love of guitar and the G.A.S that goes with it (hey email me I am always offloading gear!! lol) I love languages, and can converse in basic Japanese, and study biblical Greek. I live in Logan with my young family (so not heaps of time at the moment) and will be contributing gear reviews based on a lot of gear I have or still currently have.
