I gotta tell you, I loved this DVD, it gets almost as much playtime in my home as my Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble – Live at the El Mocambo 1983DVD.

It starts off with a few short interviews with the band, sharing a little bit of their background together and there musical goals and influences, then it goes straight into the concert.

The concert is performed in a venue, although I have never personally been there, that looks to be kinda smallish, it looks like the band was playing an intimate pub gig where the audience, probably limited to less than 1000 people, are right there with the band, instead of some huge stadium with a massive stage and enough lighting to power up a small town.

The Band played extremely well together, very tight and the music is a real blend of different genres, some cool Bluesy stuff mixed with some funky Jazzy tunes and a whole heap of everything else mixed in as well.

It’s hard to put a label on the kinda music the band plays because it’s so unique, there are not too many bands who play like the Derek Trucks band that I have heard. One reviewer on Amazon describes it as…

“The music is very “soulful”, “jazzy”, “smooth”, “jam-oriented”, and “spontaneous and improvised” at times.”

… I totally agree.

The video and audio production is great, no complaints here at all. What I also like about the filming is it doesn’t constantly jump around trying to create an extra visual element of energy or action, so you really get a feel for what’s going on on stage, and there’s no “Special Effects” added into the editing, so what you see in the video is what the crowed would of experienced live.

One thing that must be mentioned about the band is that it is definitely not a one man band, this isn’t the Derek Trucks show, every band member brings something to the party and can easily hold their own. I think this is another reason why I liked this DVD so much, there is just so much talent packed into this show that every time you watch it, something new and unique is uncovered and enjoyed.

Derek is of course incredible, the talent this guy posses is comparable to any one of the all time greats, his slide playing is exceptional and the ability to play lead without using a pick is the best I’ve seen, it certainly inspired me to throw away the pick (until I realized how hard it is to play good lead without using a plectrum ;-)).

A truly inspiring performance by Derek and the rest of his band, this DVD has something for any musician to enjoy, and from a guitarists perspective this is an absolute must for your DVD collection.

A Must see DVD.
