Peavey Delta Blues Amplifier

Before we get to the nitty gritty of my review of the Peavey Delta Blues Amplifier, let’s first have a listen to the amp and hear what Darren, our resident Guitar Gas, guitarist has to say about this workhorse from Peavey.

The guitar in the video above is an Aria Pro II Leopard fitted with Seymour Duncan Antiquities. When the amp is cranked in the video, the Pre amp section is cranked to full.

Greg Koch, the guitar virtuoso comedian extraordinaire described the Peavey Delta Blues Amplifier as the “Tone colossal from Meridian”. Meridian (USA) being where the Peavey Classic 30 (fantastic amp) and the Delta Blues are still made to this day, so hats off to Peavey for not moving off shore in all their products!

Okay, so let’s talk about this 15” speaker beast! It is part of the ‘Classic Series’ which it’s slightly more well-known lil’ brother, the Classic 30 belongs to. It is an all tube amp, but first let’s look at some specs (these specs have been sourced direct from Peavey, so they are accurate!).

Firstly the amp is fully made in the USA, has a five year warranty and are famous for being virtually indestructible. Being of the classic series, it is finished in a nice vintage tweed, matching the chrome chassis very nicely making it look quite like a Fender Bassman, but under half the price.

The amp is a powerful 30 watts of tube balls, all-tube (powered by three 12AX7 and four EL84 tubes) and man, let me tell you, I used an attenuator on the lowest setting with the amp on about 1.5 or so and it was still like a wild horse. So you can gig with this easy, miked or not, the audience is going to feel you!

Now this power is feeding into a very heavy 15” Blue Marvel  8ohm internal speaker. My impressions of the Blue Marvel were quite good although other reviews have mixed reactions.

I thought the tone was quite balanced, and with good bass (obviously being a 15”) nice mellow mids and a smooth treble response. However there was plenty of sparkle with my 62” MIJ Re-issue Strat (single coily goodness) and a Telecaster. However, I tested a few humbuckers though it (Epiphones and my recent Godin SG Signature) and they sounded fat, full and loved the Gain Channel.

The effects loop worked great (I ran my attenuator through there) and I also have used my delay pedal to perfection with no added hiss or hum.

Okay, the controls specifically. I like some reverb to wetten up my sound, and to give some body to my otherwise bodgy playing. Chet Atkins described reverb as a ‘Talent knob’ to fill in for lack of precision, and I accept that, but just the knob bit applies to me though,,,no talent here!

The reverb is a full size long Accutronics tank, going from subtly, to deep and rich to outright Fendery surf tones, so it is versatile and usable. The Delta Blues also features on board Tremolo, with Speed and Intensity controls. I am happy to report that the tremolo is also a great feature which is footswitchable, another plus for the amp.

I found that the tremolo was best done subtly as tone got a bit muddy with too much of it, but then again that could be just me though.

The Treble, Bass and Mid controls work well, although I found that the Bass and Middle were good, but weren’t really that sensitive. You could go from 3 to 10 on the mids, and it wasn’t a giant leap as it is on some amps.

The treble was fairly responsive but the Bass control was the least so, but maybe due to the speaker size and lack of volume I was using. Still though I am very happy with the tones I was able to get, even at low volumes, strong, rich but yet with clarity that I like in an amp.

Switch over and you’re on the Lead Channel. Again pretty well thumbs up here too, with the Pre and Post gain controls fairly responsive and with lots of usable tones. However once you pushed the Pre gain over 12 O’clock the gain just became fizzy. Great until about the 11 O’clock setting, which was the optimal amount of gain for vintagy type of crunch to use as a foundation which you could then boost with a nice OD pedal, but too much and it became a bit unusable to my ears.

However, still pretty good lead channel compared to say a lot of Fender gain channels! Also before I forget it has an external speaker jack to hook up more speakers (gulp, would you need any more noise??!!)

Personally I liked the amp, it looked like it means business, has a great vintage vibe and best of all, wonderful clean foundation tone that takes pedals incredibly well, is responsive and dynamic. Also very well constructed and will be as reliable as anything out there on the market.

Here are some more vids for you to check out, unfortunately the sound quality isn’t the best on some of the vids, but we’re working on that so thanks for your patience…

and last but not least, for now any ways, we have a Fender Stratocaster 62 RI made in Fullerton USA between 82 and 84.

So would I recommend this amp, definitely, but probably more so to someone who needs that power rather than a bedroom rocker, however you can attenuate it to good results. Rock on bedroom rockers…rock on! Love Joy Peace…

About strataminor

Born in Brisbane I am a bedroom guitar player, although having played in front of churches (tough crowd!!) for quite a few years so some understanding of band dynamics, timing, gear (private use compared to public use) and melodic structure, instrumental breaks (okay leather pants solos....) and of course amps! Besides from my love of guitar and the G.A.S that goes with it (hey email me I am always offloading gear!! lol) I love languages, and can converse in basic Japanese, and study biblical Greek. I live in Logan with my young family (so not heaps of time at the moment) and will be contributing gear reviews based on a lot of gear I have or still currently have.
