G & L Legacy Tribute Series Electric Guitar

G & L Guitars are an electric guitar company that were started by George Fullerton (the ‘G’ part) and Leo Fender (the ‘L’ part) after selling Fender to CBS in 1980s?? They set out to produce excellent guitars that could rival the flagship Fender Stratocaster/Telecaster and not compromise tone or quality even in their lower cost models.

Which leads me to my review today, the G & L Legacy Tribute series, a guitar that retails for about the $450/550 range for their entry model. Despite being produced in a vertically integrated factory in Indonesia or Korea (therefore much stricter QA) each guitar then is inspected in the USA to ensure maximum quality.

This guitar is one of the few budget priced instruments to get nearly top marks on such review sites as Harmony Central, Ultimate Guitar and many others, and since I have been playing one for quite a while now, I can honestly say that this holds up to MIJ and quite a few MIA Strats I have played.

Alright so now we know a bit about the company and overall guitar. My particular G & L is a gloss black body, rosewood neck with the pearloid scratch plate. Standard Strat type of contour, comfortable to play and well finished with no cheapo blemishes or shortcuts.

The timber on this model is basswood, although you can get ash for the clear finishes (the clear and blue finishes look magic with the ash grain coming through). The neck is a modern C rock maple neck, with a rosewood fingerboard. Not the thinnest neck (compared to my Godin SD which is a ‘fast’ neck) but a great general vintage vibe to it with jumbo frets and very playable.

The sealed back tuners have an 18:1 ratio, and assuming you string the guitar right in the first place they hold the tune very well. Another vital part to me is the bridge and tremolo unit, which on this guitar is the best I have ever seen on a budget axe. A G & L proprietary dual fulcrum vibrato system with nickel plated die cast saddles for that full sustain and tone,  large steel tremolo block, proper full size saddles and a whammy bar that just slides in without having to screw it in. I was blown away by the quality of the tremolo unit, it is superb and properly helps explain the excellent sustain and tone this guitar has.

This leads me naturally to pickups and tones. Firstly the pickups are 3 USA Fullerton made G & L vintage style Alnico 5 single coils, and all the G & L guitars have full spec electronics, from the cheapest to the most expensive, so no shortcuts in this vital area!

The neck pickup is very reminiscent of the Fat 50s or Custom shop 69’s I have had in many Strats, warm, ‘woody’ and very mellow for beautiful cleans, yet take an OD fine. The Bridge is not bad, excellent for OD and Fuzz etc and cuts through. I must admit my least favourite Strat tone is the bridge but this one is quite full and as good as I have heard.

Now the G & L has something extra, the PTB systems, which basically is a Master Volume, Treble and Bass system. This allows you to roll off treble from all pickups and also roll of some bass to increase the mids and regain clarity. This is a fantastic feature esp if you want tonal variation or use a different amp that may be too bright, so you can roll of some treble to get rid of any icepick. So this guitar, besides not having a humbucker, is very versatile with the great traditional Strat tones we all love.

So in summary the G & L Legacy Tribute truly is a surprisingly good guitar for less than a Mexican Strat but with better specs and consistency in build quality. Another big thumbs up from me and I will definitely be looking at the other G & L guitars over a Standard Strat any day (no offense to the Fender name of course!!)

About strataminor

Born in Brisbane I am a bedroom guitar player, although having played in front of churches (tough crowd!!) for quite a few years so some understanding of band dynamics, timing, gear (private use compared to public use) and melodic structure, instrumental breaks (okay leather pants solos....) and of course amps! Besides from my love of guitar and the G.A.S that goes with it (hey email me I am always offloading gear!! lol) I love languages, and can converse in basic Japanese, and study biblical Greek. I live in Logan with my young family (so not heaps of time at the moment) and will be contributing gear reviews based on a lot of gear I have or still currently have.
